In Súria I am known as la madre de Kira.
Everyone I am introduced to in Súria first says, ¨This must be the mother of Kira! She looks and laughs just like her!¨ My daughter is well known in this town, and well-loved. People bring out their laptops and show me pictures, and tell stories I cannot fully comprehend but are filled with laughter. It is very pleasing, an entre into a delightful world. It reminds me much of my grandmas and all their friends who dropped in, shared food, told jokes, and had a lifetime history together.

This is Ana, Kira’s Spanish mom, and Monica, the sister-in-law of Ana. Who tells a good dirty joke!

Súria itself is an interesting little town, founded around the potassium mine. An older section, with its tall structures that I think are for sorting ore and maybe drilling, dominate the north side of town, and the huge strip mine dominates the south side.

There is an old part, Poble Vell, built on the hillside, with narrow, winding cobbled streets bounded by shuttered residences and church structures.

Leaving Poble Vell, I found a dirt road and ended up in the cemetery. Given the ground is solid rock (basaltic with layers of compressed marine deposits, I think), people are buried in above-ground vaults.

Coming back down I heard drumming and horns playing. I wound through rock tunnels, up steep stairs, and around stone buildings to find the band practice of a group of guys hanging out around their cars.

  1. you are starting to become eccentric! this will do wonders for your career as a professor. those are the coolest-shaped rocks that you were standing under. the ship question is simple, and the answer debunks some widely held " scientific" truths. I consulted my pliny-the-elder/teaparty, "guide to how things really are". first, if the earth really was round, then obviously the bow would disappear first. this can easily be seen by balancing a pencil on a tomato. the tomato is the world, and the pencil is the ship.now slowly push the pencil off the tomato, and notice how the " bow" drops first.that is the law of gravity, and you can't change that. what you saw with your own eyes was the ship gradually disappear to a tiny dot. now, take the same pencil, and find a good straight stretch of freeway, and have someone push the pencil along, away from you. eventually, the pencil AND the person will become a tiny dot. is the freeway round? no. it's flat. also think of the old saying that everybody always says, " the four corners of the earth" like, "the people came from the four corners of the earth" right? does a sphere have corners? could 600 million, billion people be wrong? no. the earth is clearly flat or, worst case scenario, square. you might say, ok, mr. smart guy, if the earth is flat/square, then how do rivers flow? everything would just be a puddle ! well the last time I looked, the planet has some pretty big puddles ! we call them " oceans" and " lakes". as for why rivers flow. simply take a rubiks cube, and squirt it with a hose. did the water stick to it? no. it flowed right down.lastly, we all know about plate tectonics. there are six major plates. how many sides does a square have? SIX. the fact is, a square is weakest along the joints where the sides meet. so any time the planet flexes, like when the moon pulls on it, or a big meteor hits, these joints can flex and , earthquake! to see this, get an empty milk carton and step on it. notice that it fails along the joints. I could go on all day, but I think we all get the idea. ok, that's all for now, keep posting fun pictures, me, and moosh.
